There are many reasons a servicemember in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may face a separation board. The most common reason a servicemember is notified of a separation board is that they have allegedly committed misconduct, but the unit command team does not think that it rises to the level of a court-martial. Therefore, the unit tries to remove a servicemember through a separation board.
While a separation board can never result in you facing jail time, it is still something to be taken with absolute seriousness because it can remove you from the military and see your discharge status downgraded from Honorable, which will impact everything from your future employment to your retirement.
